Personal Storage Table (PST) is a container for Microsoft Outlook which stores emails, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, Drafts, Tasks, to do list, shared items, Journals, Alarms and many more useful Outlook elements. This storage table has a specific storage limit of file size with depends on the version of Outlook.

Whenever a PST file gets oversized, the Outlook takes a lot of time to respond and open files from it. The problem becomes even worse when you try to access emails or contacts and you are responded with following error messages:

  • “xxxx.pst cannot be accessed – 0×80040116.”
  • Reported Error 0x00040820
  • “The file could not be added to the folder. The action could not be completed.”
  • “The file xxxx.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this file, select some items that you no longer need, then permanently (shift + del) delete them.”
  • Error in Background Synchronization
  • Errors have been detected in Outlook.PST file. Quit all mail-enabled applications and run Inbox Repair Tool

Overcoming the Problem by using inbuilt repair tool

Microsoft provides a built-in Inbox Repair Tool as “Scanpst.exe” to deal with various corruption problems of PST file including corruption due to PST file crossing its fixed size limit. It is stored in MS office folder of your system drive. You can begin the repair process by using the following steps:

  • Open “scanpst.exe” application
  • Click on “browse” button to choose the oversized PST file
  • Hit the “Start” button to test the selected files for errors
  • You’ll find option like “Make backup of scanned file before repairing”
  • Select the destination location to save the backup file
  • At last initialize the repair process by pressing “Repair” button

However the inbox repair tool doesn’t repair PST file of size more than 2GB, so in order to fix oversized PST file, you need to opt for a good repair utility like Yodot Outlook PST Repair
