SD Card

3 Proven Methods to Remove Write Protection on SD Card

An SD card’s data is to be protected from any unwanted modification (done by an unauthorized person), then it can be achieved through Write Protection. This mechanism provides security to data saved on an SD card, against third-party access.

When an SD card is Write Protected, Write permissions are configured on it thus, nobody can delete, alter, move or perform any other operation on a write-protected SD card; unless Write Protection is removed.

But, if the SD card is Write Protected unintentionally due to internal system glitches, errors, viruses, improper handling, etc. then it screens the “SD card is write protected” error thus, you cannot access the saved data on the write-protected SD card.

If a brand new SD card is write-protected, it prevents you from saving new files.

So, it is necessary to remove write protection on the SD card in order to access it further. But, how to remove write protection on SD cards?

How to Remove Write Protection on SD Card?

Way 1: Remove Write Protection on SD Card via Toggle Switch

Almost every SD card includes a toggle switch (slider) on its side and it acts as a locking mechanism. When that toggle switch is at the bottom, it locks the SD card and prevents you from modifying its data.

So, check the position of the write protection switch on your SD card. If it is at the bottom, bring it to the top position in order to unlock it.

Way 2: Remove Write Protection on SD Card from Properties

Step 1: Connect the SD card to a working computer via USB

Step 2: Right-click on the Write Protected SD card

Step 3: Select Properties and switch to the Security tab

Step 4: Set Group or user names priority as Everyone

Step 5: Switch to the Permissions for Everyone tab

Step 6: Disable Deny option of the Write feature

Step 7: Apply changes and enter the OK

Way 3: Remove Write Protection on SD Card from Command Prompt

Step 1: Open Command Prompt (Run as administrator), type disk part, and hit Enter

Step 2: Then Type list disk and press Enter

Step 3: Next, type select disk S (replace S with SD card drive letter) and hit Enter

Step 4: Type attributes disk clear read-only and press Enter key

Step 5: Quit command prompt using quit command Enter key

If you cannot access SD card data even after removing Write Protection from it, then it seems the card’s file system is damaged and all you need is Yodot Hard Drive Recovery.
