Error Resolved: Failed to Add PST in Outlook 2016 – “Error 0x80004001”

Although the latest versions of Outlook offer stability and better performance, you may encounter issues in certain situations. This article discusses an error in Outlook with respect to PST files. The error message reads

‘Failed to add PST in Outlook 2016. Error 0x80004001’.

Now let us look at the reasons for this error and also ideas on how you can resolve the same. There are a number of reasons for this error ranging from improper installation of Outlook, anti-virus issues or your computer preventing you from installing new PST files. Whatever the reason for the error may be, we try to cover all aspects and provide solutions accordingly.

Step 1: Check your account settings

  • Open Outlook 2016
  • Click on File > Info > Account Settings

In the ‘Account Settings’ section, check all your account settings and verify if all the details are correct.

Step 2: Check for suspicious emails

Go through your Inbox and check for suspicious emails. In some cases, suspicious emails can also cause harm to your PST files and Outlook. If you happen to come across such emails, go ahead and delete them.

Step 3: Antivirus settings

Certain anti-virus software may be preventing you from adding a PST file in Outlook. In that case, adjust your anti-virus settings, so it doesn’t interfere with Outlook.

Step 4: Run Outlook in safe mode

The add-ins may cause issues and conflict with the normal functioning of Outlook. To avoid this problem, try starting Outlook in safe mode, which is a mode which works without add-ins.

To enter Safe Mode,

  • Click on Start > Run
  • Type ‘Outlook /safe’ and click Ok

If Outlook starts in Safe Mode, you can proceed with disabling the add-ins to identify the add-in causing trouble.

To disable add-ins

  • Click on File > Options > Add-ins
  • From the Manage drop-down, select COM Add-ins > Go
  • Clear all selected checkboxes and click Ok
  • Then choose File > Exit

Restart Outlook and select one add-in that was previously enabled. Then check if your Outlook is working. If it is, repeat the same steps for all the add-ins enabled previously. If at some point, your Outlook is not working, that is the add-in causing trouble.

Step 5: Run Scanpst.exe

The error ‘0x80004001’ can also occur due to corruption in PST files. In order to resolve corruption in these files, you can make use of the built-in Scanpst.exe tool.
