According to Microsoft, minimum hard disk space required for running Windows 10 operating system on your computer is 16 GB for 32-bit and 20 GB for a 64-bit system. You might think guides like “how to save disk space on Windows 10” is of no use since today’s drives offer large storage capacity.

However, for those users who are running old computers with new Windows 10 OS, or the one who is using Solid State Drives (SSD) as their main system hard drive, saving disk space matters a lot.

Also, getting rid of unwanted things from the hard disk maximizes the efficiency and performance of your computer.

So, here it is explained in simple ways, how to save disk space on Windows 10 system and use drive more efficiently.

Windows 10 Storage:

Type Storage in the Windows 10 Cortana and hit Enter button.

Here you reached the Window 10 Storage. Now, click on any of your drives, to view them clearly. This helps you to find out what is taking up more space on your drive. If you feel, you no longer need a data, App, Game, etc. then get rid of it immediately to release unnecessary load from the computer.

There are various sections in the Windows 10 Storage (under each drive) including Pictures, Apps and Games, Music, Videos, System and reserved, Documents, etc. Select any of these options and start cutting down unwanted space.

Few More Ways to Free Up Your Disk Space:

Under Storage sense, you can see a message that states “Windows can automatically free up space by getting rid of files you don’t need like temporary files and content in your Recycle Bin”.

This means Windows 10 itself reduces disk space to make your computer more efficient. You can just set this preference ON and modify it using the option Change how we free up space automatically.

Also, you release more space on your computer by clicking the Free up space now button located just below the Change how we free up space automatically option.

Apart from these, there are few other techniques to free up Windows 10 disk space and use it efficiently.

1. Disable Hibernation

In the System and reserved section, certain gigabytes of space is reserved for the Hibernation file. It’s a waste of disk space hence adds a dead weight on your computer, if you don’t use it.

So, disable hibernation option to free up several gigabytes of space using below procedure:

  • Go to Start menu and type cmd
  • Right-click on the Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  • Type powercfg -h off and press Enter key

2. Remove Temp Files

Temporary files on the computer are created to hold information temporarily when the file is being created/used. After the respective program/file has been closed, those temporary files should be deleted. If not, they become junk and eat up more space on your drive.

So, to get rid of these temporary files, you just have to navigate Temporary Files in the Storage section. Once you reached, the system scans the drive and shows all the temporary files you can delete safely. Select the files which you want to erase, then click Remove Files button.

3. NTFS Drive Compression

The Windows inbuilt NTFS drive compression tool examines your files and reduces their size during the process. This is very useful if your drive holds a lot of text and multimedia files.

Note: NTFS drive compression is not suggested to run on executable files.

You can compress a whole partition in Windows 10 system in a single click using NTFS drive compression tool. Here are the instructions to do it:

  • Hit Windows and E keys together
  • Right-click on the drive/partition which you want to compress
  • Select Properties
  • Enable Compress this drive to save disk space option
compress-this-drive-to-save-disk-space
  • Apply the changes and hit OK

This begins the NTFS compression process. Once it is completed, you will get a confirmation message.

4. Compress Windows 10 Installation

  • Got to Start menu and type cmd
  • Right-click on the Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  • Type compact.exe /compactOS:always and hit Enter

5. Disk Cleanup

  • Search and open Disk Cleanup from Start Menu
  • Select the drive to clean and hit OK
disk-cleanup-select-drive
  • Under Files to delete, select the unwanted file types to remove and opt OK

To view details of the files listed for deletion, select file type -> see Description.

If you wish, you can Clean up system files to free up more space on your drive.
