All of us are aware of the data storage technologies in the modern day world. The basic data storage technologies available today are Random Access Memory(RAM) and Read-Only Memory(ROM). People have been using these storage devices for a long time. These storages provide users with the best performance till now.

But with rapid changes in technology and thinking about the money spent globally on these storage devices every year, it’s about time that we replace these storage devices with a new and better one.

In recent years, people have been spending money on computer storage at alarming rates. The following diagram describes the average money spent on IT storage worldwide.

According to the research by IDC, it is expected that people would spend almost 49.9 billion U.S dollars on IT storage by the end of 2018.

By 2019, it is also expected that the IT storage spending would increase at a rate of 2.74% than that in 2018. That would amount to 51.3 billion US dollars.

What is the need for a new storage?

Even though RAM and ROM have their own superpowers, they depend upon each other for functioning. ROM makes sure our computers know how to boot up and RAM lets us run programs on these computers.

RAM is a volatile storage that provides faster data writing speed, but all of the data is lost when the system is turned off.  ROM is a nonvolatile storage with a slower data writing speed, and the data stored is permanent.

Nowadays, everyone is chasing after the latest technologies. So, if the users get the attributes of these two devices into a single one, most probably everyone would opt for that.

At the just time, the researchers of a Shanghai-based Fudan university have coined a new data storage technology that diminishes the gap between volatile and non-volatile memories.

The new storage device with two-dimensional semiconductors provide the users with a faster data writing speed and non-volatile memory within a single device.

The new memory also allows the user to select or pre-set the duration of the data on the device, which is a huge add-on to the security of the stored data.

“Our new type of computer memory is not only the best of both worlds but an improvement on the pair: It lets you decide how long you want the memory to hold the data. This new storage technology may reduce the power consumption of storage for supercomputers,” says Zhang Wei, the research lead.

It is based on a semi-floating gate transistor. This two-dimensional semi-floating gate memory allows ultra-speed writing in nanoseconds and exhibits 156 times longer refresh rate with respect to that of a dynamic RAM.

The new storage technology is roughly 10,000 times faster than the current flash discs.

A Safer Storage:

All of us are aware of the various data breaches that occur frequently in the world of technology. Likewise, data theft also occurs from various storage devices, both working and obsolete. The numbers have been increasing every year.


According to a report by Jefferies, an identity theft resource center, there were about 1360 data breaches by 2017.

The new storage technology elevates the data storage security to a new level. The storage allows the user to set the duration of data store in the device, in an arc from 10 seconds to 10 years. This ensures that your data won’t be stolen once your system turns obsolete.

“People in the future may receive a storage unit where the data is effective for, say, three days, which increases the information security. People can also have custom-made flash units with the new storage technology, in which the data stored inside will be regularly deleted at a user provided time.”, says Zhang Wei.

Despite this information, the researchers didn’t provide any answers to when this new storage device would hit the markets.

This new storage technology does great advantage to the future of technology. In the future, we are going to have cost-efficient single storages that improve our PC’s performance and data rendering speed.

The security of a data will not be a concern after the advent of this technology, as the data inside the drive will be cleared regularly at an appointed time.

When this technology makes its way into the consumer market, the concept of RAM and ROM will become obsolete. And the hardware structures of our computers and phones will be revolutionized.
