How to Recover Shift Deleted Files?

Updated on April 17, 2020

When we want to delete unwanted files and folders from our Windows computer/laptop, we usually do it in two ways:

  • Simple deletion: Deleting the unwanted files and folders using simple deletion option using 'DEL' key. Just we select the files and folders that we want to delete and click on 'DEL' key. In this case, the files and folders deleted, will be moved to the Recycle Bin folder, unless the size of files/folders are bigger than the size of the Recycle Bin folder. If the size of file or a folder is bigger than the Recycle Bin, then the deleted file/folder will bypass the Recycle Bin folder and get deleted permanently from the system. However, if the file or a folder is smaller in size, then the deleted file will be moved to the Recycle Bin, and can be restored back to the original location when needed or deleted by mistake.
  • Shift + Delete: The other option of deleting the files from Windows computer/laptop is using "Shift + Delete" keys. When files are deleted using this command, they are permanently deleted from the system, as they are not moved to the Recycle Bin folder. if you delete files using this command, then no option is available in Windows to recover shift deleted files.

What exactly happen when you use Shift + delete keys to erase a file?

The files which are no longer needed, we usually delete them permanently from the system using "Shift + Delete" keys. Hence, they bypasses the Recycle Bin folder and get deleted permanently. So that no one can restore those deleted files from the recycle bin. But the question is what happens to these files. Are they permanently erased from the hard drive?

If you use Delete key to remove a file, it is redirected to the recycle bin. As the entry in the file system gets changed from the actual location to recycle bin folder. But when you use Shift + delete key to remove the file, all the entries regarding the file is deleted from the file directory indicating the space as free memory space where new data can be written.
