Recovery of Deleted HFS Partition on Mac

“I just deleted a HFS partition on my Mac machine while performing other task in Disk Utility. Soon after realizing the mistake, I stopped adding new data on to hard drive knowing that deleted data is not permanently removed from hard drive. I even tried few possible methods to recover data from erased HFS partition, but couldn’t get back all files. Can anyone suggest me appropriate tool to recover deleted HFS partition on Macintosh system? All your suggestions would save me a day, kindly help.”

HFS - Hierarchical File System is the standard file system developed by Apple for Mac OS based computers. HFS involves advanced features when compared to FAT file system on Windows OS. This proprietary file system format was initially developed for only Mac operating systems, yet it grew widely and now it is available on other major operating systems like MS Windows and Linux. HFS is also referred to as Mac OS Standard and was supported by Apple computers running with OS 10.5 (Leopard) and earlier versions. Starting from Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard version, HFS volumes are made read-only and it can be neither created nor updated on these computers. While using HFS formatted volumes on Mac computers, users may unwillingly delete any volume which results in huge data loss.

Some possible scenarios causing deletion of HFS partition are listed below:

  • While trying to backup HFS partition from Mac computer, necessary HFS partition holding crucial information can get deleted due to user mistake
  • Sometimes, implementing Mac hard drive in to any external enclosure will erase all existing data saved on that hard drive including HFS partitions
  • Erasing entire hard drive on Mac machine while performing tasks like OS re-installation or upgrade, repartitioning hard drive, etc. will eventually lead to deletion of HFS volumes present in it
  • Creating new HFS volume on Mac using any third party partitioning tool can sometimes cause deletion of existing HFS partition on hard drive

In the above instances, all necessary data from deleted HFS partition on Mac will be lost if user lacks proper backup. But deletion is just a process of making files invisible to OS by removing index values of those files and marking the memory location as free. Thus it doesn’t cause permanent deletion of any files from erased HFS partition on Mac hard drive. So, question arises like is it possible to get back deleted HFS volume on Mac? Yes, it is possible with the help of accurate Mac data recovery software.
