Restore Files Deleted from External Hard Drive on Mac

“Can I kindly ask for some help? Yesterday I noticed that a lot of my photos from 2012 have been deleted from my external hard drive (Western Digital). I have no idea what has happened or why they have gone. I use Mountain Lion operating system on my Mac machine. I even looked up in the “Time Machine” where information is backed up, but to my bad luck it was not there. I went through net, found out many third party utilities that can do the needful, but I don't know. I really need some assistance here. Thanks in advance!”
