How to Fix Corrupted Word File?

Do you want to repair corrupted Word file? Sometimes when opening a file you will get an error message saying file cannot be read because of some problem. Word files get damaged due to many ways. Here is an error message that pops up when MS Word cannot open a document.

‘Word was unable to read this file. It may be corrupt’

By default, Microsoft Word has two possible ways to open damaged files: one is Open and Repair and the other one is open the file with Text Recovery converter. Along with these two methods, which is explained below, there are few more unique ways to open corrupt Word file. It is better to try all these options before moving on to third party application.

For the purpose of testing, I intentionally corrupted one of my Word file and tried to fix it using above 2 methods and pointed few results for each. Unfortunately, there are not much manual ways to mend damaged Word file.

Using built-in tools:

This tool can access both the options through File Open dialog. Firstly click on File and open then single click on the document you want to fix. Do not double click on it because Windows will try to open it in normal way by showing error message. Here instead of clicking on Open option, hit on black arrow which is placed on right side of the button. You will see many options, one of them is Open and Repair. Now application will try to repair the corrupted file and allows you to view it.

The next in-built feature is recovery converter that can be accessed by Open dialog. In drop down box, click on All Word Documents and again select Recover Text from any File. Now, the Word attempts to recover any text from the file. In my case, it failed and displayed error message saying file appear to be corrupted.

If both of these methods don’t work, try to insert damaged file into another Word file. To try this method, Open new file and click on Insert tab. Now click on Object and again click on Object from dropdown. Here press on Create from File tab and hit on Browser button. Select your damaged or corrupted file and see if it is able to insert the content into new doc. In my test, Word could not insert. Instead I got some unknown error.

Open in Draft Mode:

This is another way to open Word file which doesn’t need header info. To do this, Click on File and then Option. Choose ‘Advanced’ option and scroll down to ‘Show document content’ section. Here check then Show picture place holders box and Use draft font in Draft and Outline view box. Now go back to Word and click on View and then click on Draft under Document Views section. Now try to open your corrupt file and see if it opens. If not, you have to switch on to other possible way to fix this corruption. The exact product is Yodot DOC Repair software.
