Can I recover unsaved content of a Word document?

Of course, but it depends on the version of Microsoft Office you are using. Office provides two features like “Auto Recover” and “Auto Save”. Auto Recover feature makes a temporary copy of a file as you work, i.e. even if you exit your Word document the temporary copy will be available. Whereas Auto Save simply saves the file to your hard drive at special intervals, just as if you were hitting "Ctrl + S".

Auto Recover function is available on all Microsoft Office versions like Microsoft Word 2007, 2003, 2000 and 1997. The default AutoRecover file location is at:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\

AutoSave function is available on Microsoft 2010 and above versions. To find the unsaved document, open MS Word and then click on File ---> Info ---> Manage Versions then choose “Recover Unsaved Document” option. The default location is at:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles

In case you are unable to find your unsaved Word file, then you can download the trail version of Yodot File Recovery software and check whether you can find the unsaved contents of your Word document file.
